The script really didn’t make sense much and the show was kind of lame. Probably one of the worst shows on television. It’s like watching The Wonder Years sort of except it was set in the 80’s. The best show on television is Friends, The Simpsons, and Seinfeld. Those I would recommened but not Freaks and Geeks.

If this was such a great television series, why did it last only one season? The reason is, no one wants to relive their high school years especially if they were terrorized by the so-called “popular crowd” from their school. (…) The characters in this show were all certifiable. Even if the main focus of the series was to make viewers empathize with “freaks and geeks” (represented as the “stoners” and the “nerds”), the “stoners” on this show were portrayed as mean-spirited, bullying, alienated, and an unsympathetic group of misfits …even more annoying than the “popular crowd” portrayed in the series. The “nerds” come off a little better and engaging. The only bright spot of the series was comic actor Joe Flaherty (SECOND CITY TELEVISON, 1941, STRIPES,HAPPY GILMORE) as the father of the main “nerd” on the show. In the wake of Columbine, it is a good thing this show was not allowed to continue because it may have hit too close to home and too painful for many people to watch. No, this show was not great as many who fought for it might think. The fact that it barely limped through a single season proves it. To validify this fact, another televsion series with the same premise, MY SO-CALLED LIFE suffered the same fate as FREAKS AND GEEKS.

Though the show showed far and few “heartwarming” sequences of teen angst, FREAKS AND GEEKS was not a great show as eveyone thinks. Also, there were some episodes that were meant to be funny, but meanspirited. For instance there was an episode where the main “geek” was stripped of his clothes and shoved in a locker. (Is this supposed to be funny?). In another episode, the same character is supposed to buy some new clothes in order to feel that he fits in. He is talked into buying an outfit (an awful, gaudy, disco jumpsuit) by an unsympathetic, irresponsible salesclerk at a mall clothiers. Then, when he shows up at school wearing the outfit, he is harrassed by everyone (Is this comedy?). Lastly, when one of the “FREAKS” Lindsay (Linda Cardellini-Velma in the SCOOBY DOO movies), tries to dress normal and start doing better in school, she is ostracized by the other “FREAKS”. Because of this, she reverts back to her old “freaky” ways (What kind of message are they trying to send to the young viewers?). Yes, the show was overrated and it deserved its very short run. The only thing good about it was veteran comic actor Joe Flaherty as the sympathetic father and all the other characters were not fun to watch. A show that wouldn’t work because no one wants to look at a show to be reminded about how awful it was for some to be a teen growing up… especially in high school. The exception however, is the brilliant THE WONDER YEARS, because it had well defined characters to care about, great scripts and storylines.

FREAKS AND GEEKS barely limped through a single season. In fact it was cancelled almost halfway through the 1999 season but was given a reprieve because a loyal following e-mailed and wrote letters to NBC and it was allowed to finish out the season. No one to wants to relive their high school years (especially in the form of a dramedy series) because only a small minority actually had a good time going through it. The “Freaks” portrayed on the show were mean-spirited and not very likeable even though they up against the “popular crowd”. However, the “Geeks” are more engaging. Another bright spot is veteran comic actor Joe Flaherty (tv’s SECOND CITY TELEVSION and movies STRIPES,1941) as the understanding father of one of the “Geeks”. Overall, a series that wasn’t as great as everyone who fought for it might think. Another show with the same premise with teen/high school angst, MY SO CALLED LIFE, suffered the same fate as this show. The FREAKS AND GEEKS DVD box set has a lot of interesting extras to make up for lack of episodes.

  5. I work during prime time television but I always see what shows are being talked about. When this came out on DVD, I bought it because Freaks and Geeks was a show that got rave reviews from magazines. But I never saw it. I bought the complete series here and I gotta say – it’s horrible. This is so cliche and unfunny that it is unwatchable. Oh, Sam broke up with a cheerleader – so what? It wasn’t worth getting up to that point. If you are thinking about getting this because you are curious but never saw it – rent it first….It’s a drama not a comedy. If you like comedy check out good shows like The Office or Mr. Show.
