i wanted to like this show i really did. but i quickly became disinterested and am now a little cheesed off by this show. the main character is this fantasy man wrapped in a big bow, he’s smart, successful, a doctor, and rich, but he’s also deep and brooding so women love him. but these qualities are spoken, not acted out, all the other characters fall all over themselves to tell him what a perect guy he is all the while ignoring what he actually does. the premise of the show is that he becomes a private doctor to the rich and royal which somehow improves the standard of health care for the very poor. but except for one episode where he actually takes medicine from the local free clinic and gives it to a guy who can’t afford it, he doesn’t help poor people at all. the tagline of the show is “the robin hood of medicine” but it’s not like he’s taking the tons of money he’s being paid and investing it in free clinics, he does little things here and there and actually more often than not winds up using their equipment on people who could afford to have the testing done at a private facility. the whole first episode meant to endear you to hank shows him in a very negative light. he never fully comits to anything and even after being confronted with a kid who is in a very bad way and could use a doctor just like him he still doesn’t want the job, but an assistant who basically drags him through the show kicking and screaming and a hot chick ready to drop her panties after learning his name convince him to stick around and give it a try. now i find nothing wrong with wanting to get laid be a character’s motivation, but it means he can’t be the great guy they always tell him he is.

the brother character is a screw up, and thats all he does is screw up. if he ever opens his mouth in an episode it’s to screw up, or apologize for having already screwed up. problem is he’s exactly the same at the end of the season. a guy who screws up this often eventually gets killed, or kills someone and decides to grow up. it’s just boring to know what he’s gonna do in every possible scenario.

the female lead, is a mess, she’s suposed to be in charge of some department at a hospital but basically her job is to be a mess, she gets drunk and makes a fool of herself, she sleeps with this hank guy as quickly as humanly possible, then she hems and haws at the actual relationhship portion of their interaction because oh yeah her husband shows up. her free clinic idea falls through, and she constantly provides her hospitals suplies free of charge to a doctor who does not work or offiliate himself with the hospital at all. a normal person who acted like this woulda been fired years ago.

the concept is good but they seem to have forgotten how to develop characters or even keep a show on some kind of continuity.

  3. K. Ramsey says:

Basically, it’s HOUSE, only the exact opposite. By that I mean that the format is still the same: character driven, medical mystery, but with the roles reversed. Now the doctor is nice and compassionate as opposed to rude and detached. Like HOUSE, its the character interactions that drive the show, rather than the solutions to the medical mysteries. While not as good as BURN NOTICE, or, in my opinion, PSYCH, ROYAL PAINS is nonetheless a great show in an ever growing list of great original shows put out by USA Networks.

For a number of years, cable networks (USA and TNT) have been coming up with some of the best shows on television. Royal Pains is one of them. Enjoy!!!

  5. As a new series, an interesting trek when competing with the Medical TV series on offer. I would discribe him as a “Macguyver” Doctor who always comes through.
